Divorces are common and they’re no longer frowned upon, but one New Jersey native would rather be a widow than a divorcee.
Woman Hires Hit on Husband to “Not Break Hearts”
In an attempt to not break her husband’s heart, Julia Merfeld allegedly hired an undercover police detective posing as a hit man to kill her husband. Merfeld recently moved to Michigan with her husband and two children, and decided that she no longer wished to be married. Instead of disappointing her family, she said, she would rather have him killed because its “…easier than divorcing him”.

To make this crime even more coldhearted, Merfeld requested that the murder be committed outside because “it would be messy in the house”. Additionally, she had already made arrangements for a friend to move into the home, and she was afraid that the friend would change her mind about becoming roommates if her husband was killed inside.
Surveillance tapes from the undercover detective’s car show Merfeld agreeing to pay $50,000 out of her husband’s $400,000 life insurance policy for the hit. Merfeld pled guilty In June to solicitation for murder and faces a minimum of six years in prison.
