Grey Divorce in Hollywood

As discussed in a recent NearSay blog post, the percentage of divorces involving baby boomers is steadily on the rise. The ever growing demographic is comprised of ordinary working couples, couples where there was a stay at home parent, or retired spouses. Included in the mix are those who chose to spend part of their life in spotlight- Hollywood celebrities. A list of notable pairs who are choosing to call it quits include:

Sean Penn and Robin Wright

Penn and Wright met in the 1990’s, and were married from 1996 until 2010. The former couple has two children together. In an interview with The Telegraph, Wright spoke of her divorce, saying “Divorce in and of itself, and with children, is devastating”. The situation, according to Wright, was less than ideal especially because there were children involved. She claimed that she and Penn tried numerous times to make their marriage work for the sake of their children, because they were desperate to keep their family together.

David Cassidy and Sue Cassidy

Former The Partridge Family television star, David Cassidy and his wife of 23 years, Sue, are headed for divorce. The couple were together for 28 years before Sue announced their intentions earlier this week. David, who has long struggled with an alcohol abuse problem, is currently in rehab for his addiction. Sue did not state whether or not this was a tipping point in their relationship.

Bruce Jenner and Kris Kardashian

The former Olympian and reality TV fixture announced their intention to divorce in October of 2013, after more than 20 years together. However, Kardashian is refusing to proceed with the divorce until after her reality TV show wraps up production in 2015, in an attempt to draw in viewers with a lengthy and very public separation. Reports have surfaced that Jenner is happier than ever and enjoying the time away from his controlling wife and the cameras.

Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore

Actor Mel Gibson and his wife, Robyn Moore, were married for over 26 years before their divorce was finalized in late 2011. The former couple, who have 7 children together, are a prime example of why prenuptial and postnuptial agreements are incredibly important. Because the two had no agreement concerning finances in the event of a divorce, Moore was estimated to have received half of Gibson’s $800 million fortune, as well as a sizeable portion of his retirement benefits.

As you can see, grey divorces have been a Hollywood staple for years. And just like with “regular” couples, celebrity divorces can vary in intensity, as some are contested and some are uncontested.
