In the state of New York, adoptions are process through New York State Adoption Services (NYSAS) via the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. There are three types of authorized adoption agencies in New York: regional agencies, public agencies and voluntary agencies. Our firm may be able to assist you in choosing an adoption agency and working with that adoption agency to secure a successful adoption.
If you are adopting within New York State, you will have to submit an application to adopt, complete a home study, attend an agency-sponsored training and work with a caseworker to find a child. State adoptions are completed in New York State court. We can file a petition for completion of adoption so that your adoption can be finalized. According to NYSAS, the adoption process “may take six months or more from the time you apply before a child is placed in your home; it will take at least three to twelve months after that before the adoption may be finalized in court.”
At our firm, we understand that adoption matters can be very sensitive. Our attorneys work tirelessly and compassionately to support our client’s cases and provide legal counseling on matters including adoption, visitation, child custody, paternity, child support, and modification of court orders. We work with families in New York courts including in the courts of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Richmond (Staten Island).
